Decatur Central High School Basketball Team Gears Up for a Dynamic Season
(Senior Eric Hopson)
As the new basketball season approaches, the Decatur Central High School team is poised for an exciting journey filled with youth, talent, and a dash of experience. Coming off a 14-8 record last season, the team faces the challenge of rebuilding after losing two starters and graduating two seniors. With only two varsity players returning, the Hawks are embracing a new era led by a standout freshmen.

While the team may be young, they are not lacking in key contributors. Senior Eric Hopson and his younger brother, junior Tyrae Hopson, Sophomore Nash Sigmund and Sophomore PG Keil Baker, provide scoring prowess and leadership as guards, anchoring the team's backcourt with their offensive capabilities. Junior Isaac Beck, a lengthy wing player known for his ability to stretch the floor and contribute on the boards, adds versatility and depth to the lineup.

Freshman sensation Quintyn Voltz has quickly made a name for himself as one of the best guards in the country, bringing a level of skill and maturity beyond his years. Alongside him, Lavell Love adds another layer of talent to the team, forming a formidable duo that promises to make a significant impact on the court.

With a smaller roster, the team's identity is shaping up to be scrappy, fast-paced, and reliant on sharpshooting from beyond the arc. Coach Brian Surber, a seasoned veteran with over 14 years of coaching experience at Decatur Central, is poised to lead the team with his expertise and guidance, instilling a winning mentality and a commitment to excellence.

During the summer season, Decatur Central showcased their potential with a 4-0 start, including impressive wins over strong opponents such as Roncalli, Beech Grove, and Lutheran, the 2A state champions. While the team faced a 2-2 record in the recent Charlie Hughes tournament, securing victories against East Noble and Tipton High School, they also gained valuable experience from competitive matchups against Brebeuf and Providence Pioneers.

As the Decatur Central Hawks gear up for the upcoming season, fans can expect an exciting brand of basketball characterized by tenacity, speed, and sharpshooting. With a mix of youth, experience, and coaching excellence, the team is primed to make their mark on the court and compete at a high level as they strive for success in the challenging landscape of high school basketball.
